Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka has urged faster development in Papua following the creation of two new agencies tasked with accelerating growth in Indonesia’s easternmost region.

The two institutions — the Papua Special Autonomy Development Acceleration Agency (BP3OKP) and the Papua Special Autonomy Development Acceleration Executive Committee — are designed to complement each other in driving Papua’s progress, he said during a visit to Manokwari, West Papua, on Tuesday.

“Now there are two agencies. I ask that development moves twice as fast, innovation in policymaking doubles, and the benefits for the people double,” Gibran said.

He emphasized that development must be consistent and sustainable, warning it cannot be achieved within just a year or two.

Gibran highlighted priority issues including life expectancy, stunting rates, access to healthcare, and participation in the Free Health Check-up program.

Under the government’s 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan, 24 new hospitals are slated for construction across Papua, he noted.

During a recent visit to Jayapura, the vice president said Papuan hospitals are increasingly equipped with advanced medical tools — including CT scans, MRI machines, head labs, mammography units, and digital panoramic devices — supported by specialist doctors.

With these upgrades, Gibran expressed hope Papuans would no longer need to travel to Makassar for medical care, saying adequate treatment is now available closer to home.

He said the new agencies would work under President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to ensure that Papua’s development is coordinated and inclusive.

“Papua’s development must be a national priority and involve indigenous communities at every stage to ensure their welfare,” Gibran said.

Gibran is on a two-day working visit to Manokwari from November 4–5 to oversee the government’s programs in Papua and evaluate progress under the region’s special autonomy framework.
