Jakarta (ANTARA) - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reported that Indonesia’s Human Development Index (HDI) rose to 75.90 in 2025, placing the country in the high category.

“This figure reflects an increase of 0.88 points from 75.02 in 2024,” Deputy for Balance and Statistical Analysis at BPS, Moh. Edy Mahmud, said during a press conference here on Wednesday.

One of the 2025 HDI components is Life Expectancy at Birth, which stands at 74.47 years, an increase of 0.32 years compared to 2024.

According to BPS, the rise in Life Expectancy at Birth indicates an improvement in public health standards, supported by higher awareness of childbirth in health facilities, the importance of safe drinking water, and better access to healthcare services.

Another component, the Mean Years of Schooling for those aged 25 and above, reached 9.07 years - equivalent to the third grade of junior high school - up by 0.09 years from 2024.

The Expected Years of Schooling also increased to 13.3 years in 2025, a rise of 0.22 years compared to 2024. This suggests that children entering school at age seven are projected to pursue education equivalent to the second year of college.

The increases in Mean Years of Schooling and Expected Years of Schooling reflect improvements in educational facilities and access, as well as greater public awareness of the importance of education.

The adjusted real per capita expenditure per year reached Rp12.8 million (US$765.11), an increase of Rp461 thousand compared to 2024. This figure represents the average annual expenditure of the population based on constant 2012 prices, with South Jakarta serving as the reference area.

Highland Papua recorded the lowest HDI at 54.91, placing it in the low category, while Jakarta had the highest at 85.05, in the high category. Among all provinces, West Java posted the largest increase at 0.98 points, while Central Papua had the smallest at 0.39 points.

By category, three provinces recorded a very high HDI, 30 provinces were in the high category, four in the medium category, and one in the low category.

“There are provinces with an upgraded HDI status in 2025 - Riau Islands rose from high to very high, and Southwest Papua from medium to high,” Mahmud added.
