Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) and National Police (Polri) launched a joint investigation Friday after an explosion occurred at State High School 72 (SMAN 72) inside a navy housing complex in North Jakarta’s Kelapa Gading Subdistrict.

Navy spokesman Rear Admiral Tunggul said authorities are still determining the cause and sequence of the blast, which occurred around 12:15 p.m. local time.

“The Navy and police are conducting an investigation to uncover the cause of the explosion,” Tunggul said in a statement.

“Further information will be shared once verified data is available,” he added.

He confirmed that several victims were taken by navy personnel to nearby hospitals for medical treatment but said the total number of casualties remains unclear.

Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri said 54 people suffered minor to moderate injuries, and some have already been discharged from hospitals.

“As of now, 54 people were injured, mostly lightly. Updates will be provided once further details are available,” he said at Cempaka Putih Islamic Hospital.

Police cordoned off the area and deployed bomb disposal units to secure and sterilize the site.

Tunggul reiterated that both navy and police personnel remain at the scene to assist with evacuation and investigation efforts.

The police’s elite counterterrorism unit, Densus 88, is also examining whether the blast had any link to terrorism.

“Densus 88 is still assessing if there are any elements of terrorism involved,” police spokesman Adjunct Senior Commissioner Mayndra Eka Wardhana told reporters.

Jakarta Police Spokesman Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto said investigators are proceeding cautiously to prevent any secondary explosions.

“We are working with the bomb squad to thoroughly sweep the area and determine the source of the blast,” he said.
