Jakarta (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) Working Committee for the National Education System Bill is seeking to bolster vocational education as one of the main pillars of education in the bill.

"There have been many inputs related to vocational education. They complained that specific competencies achieved by health workers have not been recognized," member of Commission X of the DPR Abdul Fikri Faqih said in a statement cited on Friday.

According to him, recognizing the competencies acquired from vocational education institutions is key to ensuring graduates are job-ready.

"Concepts like the one applied in Singapore can be used as an example. Their system allows students to enter and exit at various levels according to their competencies, without losing recognition for their learning achievements," he said.

Faqih stated that all suggestions from regions will be crucial material for formulating the National Education System Bill.

He emphasized that the DPR wants to ensure the future national education system can provide fair recognition for vocational, general, and religious education.

In addition to vocational issues, the working committee also received several other inputs, including those related to the recognition of religious education and fairness in education budgeting.

Of the total education budget, which reaches Rp757 trillion (US$45.3 billion), the majority of it is said to be still absorbed by other ministries and institutions, not directly by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education or the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology.

Faqih confirmed that the DPR decided to postpone submitting the draft National Education System Bill to the Legislation Body in order to accommodate more public aspirations.

"Because it is a DPR-initiative bill, the deliberation must be more open," he remarked.
