Jakarta (ANTARA) - The number of victims of the explosion at State Senior High School (SMAN) 72 in North Jakarta on Friday (November 7) has risen to 96, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police has announced.

According to Jakarta Metropolitan Police's Public Relations Bureau head, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, the latest tally was based on the newest data obtained by his side and had been announced earlier by Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo.

"The number of victims we announced during yesterday's doorstop was at 54, but the data remains dynamic. The latest data indicated the victim count now stands at 96 people," Hermanto stated at a press conference on Saturday.

The increase was due to new victims admitted to medical facilities and repeat verification by officers, he noted.

Hermanto said that 67 of the victims have been discharged from the hospital, while 29 others remain under medical care in several hospitals in Central Jakarta.

"14 victims were treated at Cempaka Putih Islamic Hospital, while 14 others were at Yarsi Hospital, and one at Pertamina Hospital," he noted.

Families are allowed to arrange the treatment for their children as they see most convenient, the police officer said in response to queries about the lone victim hospitalised at Pertamina Hospital. "The victims have been treated at public health centres, the navy clinic, or referral hospitals," he added.

The explosion occurred on Friday at the mosque of State Senior High School (SMAN) 72, injuring dozens, mostly students, with burns and shrapnel wounds, and triggering panic among students, staff, and nearby residents.

Eyewitnesses said the blast happened while students and teachers were performing Friday prayers. The first explosion reportedly occurred during the sermon, followed by a second one from another direction. Gun replicas were reportedly found at the school after the blast.

A preliminary investigation has identified one of the school’s students as a suspected perpetrator. While bullying has been reported as a possible motive, Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf has cautioned against drawing conclusions about the bullying factor.
