Jakarta (ANTARA) - Social Affairs Minister Syaifullah Yusuf has urged all parties to take an active role in preventing bullying in schools, warning that its effects can have long-term consequences for victims.

“This is not only related to the SMAN 72 school explosion case, but generally, we must prevent bullying in schools,” he said at the Cempaka Putih Islamic Hospital after visiting the student victims treated there on Sunday.

He highlighted three critical issues that require collective attention: acts of bullying, regardless of the perpetrator or victim; physical and sexual violence in schools; and intolerance.

“These are issues we must monitor together,” he stressed. He clarified that he was not linking the recent explosion to bullying, as it is the police’s authority to provide an official explanation.

Earlier, Greater Jakarta (Metro Jaya) Police Public Relations Head Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto stated that the suspected perpetrator of the explosion at public high school SMAN 72 Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, is a minor.

The suspect is currently undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) after surgery.

“The injuries are mainly to the head, with some scratches. Yes, surgery was performed on the head,” Hermanto said at the Metro Jaya Police HQ.

He added that the suspect is now conscious but still requires ongoing medical care. The injuries are serious, particularly to the head, and required surgery.

The suspected perpetrator remains in the ICU under strict police supervision to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure safe medical treatment.

“Strictly guarded, definitely. This applies not only to the perpetrator but also to the victims, because we hope there will be no more victims,” he said.
