Sydney, Australia (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday praised former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating as a deeply experienced leader with clear and insightful views after meeting him in Sydney.

Speaking to reporters following the meeting at his hotel, Prabowo said he appreciated the productive discussion and valued Keating’s perspectives on global and regional issues.

He described the exchange as enriching, noting that Keating’s decades of experience offered valuable insights.

“I think it was a very good meeting,” Prabowo said, adding that Keating’s sharp understanding of international affairs and economics provided him with fresh viewpoints.

The meeting took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere, covering a wide range of strategic topics, including international relations, economic cooperation, and regional geoeconomic and geopolitical developments.

According to Prabowo, Keating’s long experience in leadership and policymaking makes him one of the most knowledgeable figures on global dynamics. Both men exchanged ideas on various cross-sectoral strategic matters relevant to regional stability and cooperation.

“In the fields of international relations, economics, and geopolitics — we discussed many things,” Prabowo said.

The discussion with Keating was part of Prabowo’s official visit to Sydney, which also included meetings with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese earlier in the day.

During a joint statement aboard the amphibious assault ship HMAS Canberra, Prabowo and Albanese announced a new bilateral agreement to strengthen defense and security cooperation between Indonesia and Australia.

The agreement, according to both sides, underscores a shared commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Prabowo reaffirmed that Indonesia and Australia are close neighbors with intertwined strategic interests. He said strong cooperation between the two nations would deliver mutual benefits not only to both countries but also to the wider region.

“We must understand that we are neighbors. Good cooperation in all areas will bring great benefits to both countries and to our region as a whole,” Prabowo said.
