"Redistributing teachers in the country is a strategic measure to accelerate the improvement of national education quality," she said in her statement here on Thursday.
Based on the records of the Indonesian Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, for the 2024-2025 academic year, the number of teachers across Indonesia reached 4.21 million.
This figure includes teachers from various levels of education, ranging from kindergartens to special needs schools, operating under the coordination of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
The Main Education Data (Dapodik) recorded that as of December 2024, Indonesia still faced a shortage of approximately 374,000 teachers in various state schools.
Conversely, there is a surplus of 62,764 civil servant teachers and 166,618 non-civil servant teachers in certain subjects.
As a result, the existing number of teachers does not have the maximum impact on improving the quality of education nationwide.
In this regard, Moerdijat encouraged every region to immediately update the data on teacher needs in their respective regions, which will serve as the basis for teacher redistribution.
She also expressed hope for an extensive dissemination of information regarding teacher redistribution to encourage stakeholders in regions to implement the policy precisely.
The MPR deputy speaker also called for all parties' support for the government's teacher redistribution initiative to realize equitable and high-quality national education services capable of producing a globally competitive future generation.
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has earlier stated that the year 2026 will mark the start of the redistribution of civil servant teachers and the strengthening of inclusive education in community-run educational units.
