Patria made the remarks during a signing ceremony for a collaboration between state telecommunications company Telkom Indonesia and UGM to develop the center at the university’s Innovation and Creativity Arena (GIK).
“In Southeast Asia, the digital economy could reach $1 trillion by 2030, with Indonesia contributing 40 percent. The AI Center of Excellence will support this growth,” Patria said.
With the region’s largest population, Indonesia is considered a key driver for digital economy expansion and adoption of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI).
“Indonesia is expected to contribute around $366 billion by 2030 to the regional digital economy,” Patria added, stressing the need to accelerate AI adoption to remain competitive.

The center, developed in collaboration with academic and industry stakeholders, aims to strengthen AI research, innovation, and digital talent in higher education.
“We hope this center becomes a hub for AI learning, research, and innovation, producing AI-based solutions to address current challenges,” Patria said.
He also encouraged replicating similar partnerships at other universities to expand Indonesia’s national AI ecosystem.
Telkom Indonesia’s IT Digital Director Faizal Rochmad Djoemadi said the collaboration would combine university research strengths with industry needs, noting that academic research supports long-term innovation while industry drives commercialization.
The AI center will act as a “link-and-match” hub, accelerating downstream research and reinforcing the campus innovation ecosystem. “This collaboration will create a large ecosystem to accelerate our initiatives,” UGM Rector Ova Emilia said.
