The two parties held a meeting with Conservation International on the sidelines of the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belem, Brazil, on Friday (November 14), according to a statement cited on Sunday.
During the meeting, Fiji praised Indonesia for its success in managing the forestry sector responsibly, including through green initiatives taken under REDD+, which aims to encourage developing nations to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.
The Pacific country also expressed interest in learning from Indonesia’s experience and establishing a partnership focused on best-practice sharing and capacity-building related to climate mitigation and forest governance.
In response, the Indonesian Forestry Ministry's Expert Staff for Climate Change Haruni Krisnawati emphasized that Indonesia is open to stepping up collaboration in the field with the government of Fiji.
"However, it is essential that we update the foundation of our cooperation," she said, referring to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the two ministries in April 2018, which expired in April 2023.
The official asserted that an update to the MoU is crucial for Indonesia and Fiji to take their climate change mitigation cooperation to new heights in the future.
The 2018 MoU, inked during the Asia-Pacific Rainforest Summit III in Yogyakarta, laid out cooperation on technology use for lumber and non-lumber forestry products, as well as the sustainable development of forest-sourced biomass.
It also guided Indonesia and Fiji to promote eco-friendly practices in forestry product trade and to balance the use and protection of wild plants and animals.
The meeting reaffirmed the two countries' shared commitment as archipelagic nations to strengthen cooperation in forest management and climate mitigation amid global environmental challenges.
