Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's state-owned oil company PT Pertamina (Persero) has discovered potential unconventional oil and gas reserves amounting to 724 million barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) in the Rokan Working Area (WK) in Riau.

Deputy CEO of Pertamina Oki Muraza said the discovery was one of the company’s key achievements in 2025 and would help strengthen national production capacity.

"We have made the largest discovery in the last 10 years. We discovered unconventional oil and gas in the Rokan Working Area with potential reaching 724 million barrels," he said during a hearing with Commission VI of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He predicted that additional oil and gas reserves may still be found. According to him, the discovery in WK Rokan comes from only one geological structure, and there could be even greater potential.

"It is only from one structure, and of course, Indonesia's unconventional potential is far greater than that. This is one of the largest conventional and unconventional discoveries within Pertamina Group," he said.

In the green energy sector, Pertamina has begun producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), currently reaching 9,000 barrels per day.

The company is also in the process of converting three of its refineries to enable co-processing using used cooking oil as feedstock to support low-emission aviation fuel production.

Regarding gas infrastructure, Pertamina has carried out revitalization work on the Arun Tank, which is expected to be completed by December 2025.

"For logistics facilities, four fuel storage tanks of 29,000 m³ each will enhance Pertamina’s inventory capacity at the Balongan Refinery, covering the western part of Java," he said.

Furthermore, Pertamina is developing a hydrogen pilot plant in Ulubelu, Tanggamus, Lampung, which will produce 100 kilograms of hydrogen per day. According to him, it will eventually be integrated with production facilities in Cikampek and West Java.

In the geothermal sector, the Lumut Balai Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) in South Sumatra has generated 800 GWh annually.

"For green energy in the form of ethanol-blended gasoline, we have launched Pertamax 95 at 168 outlets to provide lower-emission fuel options," he said.
