Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - The Primary and Secondary Education Ministry has called on teachers to prepare students with 21st-century competencies through meaningful and enjoyable learning along with deep learning, fun mathematics, coding, and digital literacy.

“This is how we prepare future generations with the skills needed for the 21st century,” Director of Primary Education Teachers, Rachmadi Widdiharto, said after teaching a sixth-grade class during the “Director Teaching” program at elementary school SD Pujokusuman, here on Thursday.

However, Widdiharto emphasized that technological skills should be balanced with character building, values, and attitudes to ensure students are not only cognitively strong but also ready to face the challenges of the digital era.

According to him, students today are highly active in following fast-spreading issues and information, which challenges teachers to keep pace and guide them.

He encouraged teachers to leverage accessible learning resources while redefining learning to be more meaningful, conscious, and enjoyable, fostering curiosity and critical thinking.

During his teaching session at SD Pujokusuman, Widdiharto illustrated how geometric concepts can be connected to students’ future career aspirations, such as doctors, musicians, or police officers.

This approach, he said, helps students understand the purpose of learning and nurtures curiosity.

“The idea is that students understand why they learn, what the benefits are, and how it challenges them. Curiosity and critical thinking are developed through this process,” he explained.

Widdiharto added that the Director Teaching program is part of the National Teachers Month, launched by the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education to commemorate National Teacher Day 2025.

Activities also include webinars and podcasts to highlight the role of teachers and education staff in providing quality education.
