In a statement issued in Jakarta on Thursday, Director General Fauzan underscored the importance of science and technology as the foundation of Indonesia’s economic development.
“We must move toward a knowledge-based economy that relies on the ability to convert knowledge into added value and national competitiveness,” he said.
Fauzan outlined two strategic pillars to realize science-and technology-driven economic development.
The first pillar, he explained, is strengthening the software aspect through the accelerated adoption of AI across sectors. The second is the development of technological infrastructure - particularly a domestic semiconductor ecosystem - which he said will serve as a key foundation for national digital transformation.
According to Fauzan, both pillars are prerequisites for ensuring that AI utilization delivers tangible impact and aligns with the development agenda set out in the Astacita of the President and Vice President.
“AI must bring broad benefits. It should not only function as a technology but also drive renewable energy, strengthen agricultural technology, accelerate downstreaming, and advance the digital economy,” he said.
Echoing Fauzan’s remarks, Chair Professor of Learning Technologies and Innovation at The Education University of Hong Kong, Lim Cher Ping, noted that Asia could become a global economic powerhouse by 2050 but continues to face challenges related to inequality, urbanization, and unequal access to education.
He emphasized that the rapid digital transformation following the pandemic must be accompanied by equal improvements in quality.
According to Lim, trends such as micro-credentials and digital portfolios will become increasingly dominant, with cross-institutional collaboration emerging as a key factor - one that can be strengthened through cyber-based university networks to support equitable education.
“We must ensure that digital learning is inclusive and accessible across all regions,” Lim said.
