Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) confirmed that by Friday afternoon, most residents who evacuated following Mount Semeru’s eruption in Lumajang, East Java, have gradually returned home.

Head of BNPB’s Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, said the return of residents coincides with improving conditions in several affected areas.

“Among them, 187 climbers previously reported on the Ranu Kumbolo route have also safely descended,” he informed.

While specific details on the evacuees' return were not disclosed, BNPB’s Operations Control Center recorded that they had sheltered in nine locations, accommodating a total of 1,116 people as of Thursday (November 20) evening.

Muhari emphasized that despite residents returning home, local authorities continue providing basic services.

Efforts include establishing public kitchens and distributing logistical aid and equipment, such as food, tarpaulins, blankets, and personal protective gear.

BNPB continues to monitor Mount Semeru’s volcanic activity in coordination with technical ministries and agencies to ensure safety for residents and field personnel.

Furthermore, the Geological Agency reported the eruption occurred on Wednesday (November 19) at 4 p.m., with an ash column reaching 2,000 meters above the summit.

Hot clouds traveled up to seven kilometers from the peak, with dense gray ash dispersing northward and northwest.

Seismogram readings recorded a maximum amplitude of 40 millimeters and a duration of about 16 minutes and 40 seconds.

Although eruptive activity ended at 6:11 p.m., local authorities and the Geological Agency maintain Level IV or "Warning” status.

Lumajang District has declared an active disaster emergency until November 26 to anticipate potential follow-up volcanic activity.

East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa emphasized the importance of conducting comprehensive mitigation on infrastructure following Semeru's eruption to ensure residents’ safety and movement.

“Even the smallest damage can have seriously hinder residents’ movement and aid distribution. Quick and measured handling is important to safeguarding public safety,” she said on November 20.
