Indonesia and Australia have agreed to strengthen rules-based global governance and support an open multilateral trading system to secure global supply chains ahead of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The summit, scheduled for 22–23 November 2025 under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” comes amid growing geopolitical tensions and concerns over global trade fragmentation.
"We need to strengthen market-based mechanisms to safeguard supply chain security through innovation and cooperation," said Raden Edi Prio Pambudi, Indonesia’s deputy for economic cooperation and investment coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs.
He delivered the remarks during a strategic bilateral meeting between the Australian and Indonesian G20 Sherpas on Friday.
In a statement issued in Jakarta, Edi said Indonesia expressed full support for South Africa’s G20 Presidency and pushed progress on four priorities: disaster resilience, debt sustainability, fair and inclusive energy transition financing, and responsible development of critical minerals.
Indonesia stressed that efforts to expand critical mineral supply chains must ensure environmental sustainability and minimize long-term ecological impacts.
Edi said Indonesia remains committed to working with the United States as the 2026 G20 Presidency and is preparing for the first Sherpa meeting under US leadership.
Indonesia also called for meaningful outcomes at the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference in March 2026 in Yaoundé, Cameroon, saying it will be key to rebuilding trust in the multilateral trading system.
Both sides also discussed the responsible use of artificial intelligence, noting the importance of maintaining public trust as the technology evolves.
The Australian delegation emphasized the need to keep the G20 as the world’s main economic forum and called for the Leaders’ Declaration to address geopolitical tensions, women’s economic empowerment, and faster climate action, especially in making energy transition more affordable.
The meeting was attended by Australian First Assistant Secretary Lisa Elliston and Sherpa representatives from both countries.
