She said the series of bullying incidents in schools should serve as a national warning, as the trend has become increasingly alarming. Comprehensive efforts, she added, are needed to prevent further cases and protect students.
“This is a national alarm that violence in school environments has reached a fatal level, no longer limited to problematic student behavior,” she said here on Tuesday.
Maharani noted that bullying cases are increasing, with some resulting in serious injuries, psychological trauma and even death.
She said many cases indicate that bullying occurs due to weak school supervision, limited character-building programs and negative influences from the internet.
Teachers, she added, play a central role in preventing bullying by providing consistent character education, monitoring student interactions and fostering an inclusive and safe school culture.
“However, this responsibility must not rest solely on teachers. The state and schools must build a supportive system,” she said.
Maharani expressed concern over recent fatal bullying cases, including incidents involving a student in South Tangerang and another in Wonosobo District, both of whom died after alleged assaults by their schoolmates.
She said further action is required to address bullying and that law enforcement efforts must be aligned with the principles of juvenile justice and child protection.
The House Speaker emphasized that the state must intervene with comprehensive corrective measures, noting that children’s safety in schools is not only the responsibility of teachers or principals, but also a fundamental responsibility of the state.
