“We have started (weather modification) flight operations to divert rainfall toward the sea. These efforts are now ongoing,” Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno said here on Friday.
He explained that Tropical Cyclone Senyar, which caused extreme rainfall across Sumatra, has begun to weaken. However, he urged the public to remain alert as Tropical Cyclone Koto has emerged in northern areas.
“We are monitoring Cyclone Koto, which is located farther north. We hope it will not approach Indonesia’s land territory,” he said.
Similar to Cyclone Senyar, Cyclone Koto may influence weather patterns in Aceh and North Sumatra, potentially triggering heavy rain and strong winds.
Pratikno said President Prabowo Subianto has instructed all agencies to accelerate disaster response in Sumatra.
On Friday, the government dispatched four aircraft carrying large-scale assistance to three affected provinces through Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta.
He emphasized that government agencies have acted swiftly under the President’s direct command.
“From day one, the President instructed us to move quickly with support from the TNI (military), Police, and local governments. For the emergency response, emergency tents, food supplies, and daily necessities have already been delivered,” he said.
The government also deployed three Hercules aircraft and one newly arrived A400 to transport logistics to affected communities in the three provinces.
Communication devices, rubber boats, and power generators are essential supplies needed to restore access to disaster-hit locations, Pratikno added.
On Friday, the North Sumatra Regional Police said they are intensifying efforts to locate victims affected by floods and landslides in the province.
According to the police, so far, 367 disaster sites have been recorded across 20 districts. The incidents have resulted in 62 fatalities, dozens of injuries, and 65 people still missing.
