P2MI Minister Mukhtarudin urged migrant workers abroad to prioritize safety, follow building renovation rules, and maintain insurance and employment registration, in a press release Friday (Nov. 28).
The fire on Wednesday (Nov. 26) claimed four Indonesian migrant workers: two died and two were injured, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported. Mukhtarudin extended condolences to the victims’ families.
The ministry said it continues to monitor the situation and coordinate with Hong Kong authorities to ensure protection and assistance for Indonesian workers.
The fire, rated a "5-alarm" emergency, started around 2:51 p.m. at Wang Cheong House from sparks on bamboo scaffolding, P2MI said.
Flammable materials, including polystyrene boards used in exterior wall renovations, and dry conditions with a "red fire danger" warning, contributed to the blaze spreading across eight apartment towers.
More than 1,000 firefighters battled the fire for over 24 hours. One firefighter, 37-year-old Ho Wai Ho, died during the operation.
Hong Kong authorities arrested three suspects, including two company directors and a consultant, for negligence causing deaths, citing slow evacuation and substandard materials.
Investigations include reviewing 16 prior safety inspections by the Hong Kong Labour Department. P2MI supports transparency and full accountability to prevent future tragedies in high-density residential complexes.
Indonesian volunteers set up aid posts at Tai Po community centers, offering food, clothing, and psychological support to affected families and survivors.
P2MI verified migrant worker data through a hotline at Fung Leung Kit Memorial Secondary School and Nethersole Hospital, and immediately processed emergency assistance for families of deceased workers, Novita and Erawati, who were not registered with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan.
Psychological support is available via the Hong Kong Red Cross (+852 5164 5040), Mental Health Support Hotline 18111, Open Up Counseling (+852 9101 2012), and Indonesian-language Peduli Kasih Hotline (+852 5688 7554).
Mukhtarudin reaffirmed P2MI will continue official updates and coordinate with Hong Kong authorities as investigations progress.
