"These require synergy and cannot be addressed individually," he said in a coordination meeting on anticipation ahead of Christmas and New Year holidays in Jakarta on Monday.
He asserted that in the last three weeks, major landslides and flash floods struck Central Java, Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, thereby prompting mitigation efforts by regional governments to prevent casualties.
Karnavian also reminded regional governments to strengthen their preparedness for the expected increase in public mobility during the year-end holiday period, covering land, sea, and air transport.
In addition, the year-end holiday period has the potential to trigger a rise in food prices due to high public demand for various social and religious activities.
"Thus, we must pay attention to food stocks and distribution readiness," he stressed.
Furthermore, the minister asked regional governments and security forces to monitor public gathering spots during New Year's Eve celebrations to prevent excessive crowding that could trigger fatal incidents.
Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Teuku Faisal Fathani, explained that over the next two months, Java, Bali, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), parts of South Sulawesi, South Papua, and Kalimantan will experience high to very high rainfall.
He also mentioned the potential for tropical disturbances or tropical cyclones in the southern waters of Indonesia, extending to NTT, the Arafura Sea, and south of Papua.
Regions that need to increase vigilance are Bengkulu, Lampung, Banten, Jakarta, Java, Bali, NTB, NTT, Maluku, South Papua, and Central Papua.
"BMKG continues to coordinate with ministries and agencies for weather modification operations to reduce extreme weather risks during the peak of the rainy season and the Christmas and New Year holidays," Fathani remarked.
