Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Social Affairs Minister Agus Jabo Priyono distributed aid to flood victims in Langkat, North Sumatra, to ensure the fulfillment of their basic needs.

“We want to ensure basic needs are met during this emergency response. Next, we will work to provide clean water, electricity, and fuel as soon as possible,” he said in an official statement here on Friday.

Prior to visiting Langkat, Priyono also assessed flood-affected areas in Aceh Tamiang.

According to the Langkat District Head, floods have impacted 16 districts, affecting around 200 thousand residents.

To meet urgent needs, the Ministry of Social Affairs has collaborated with the Langkat District Government, Social Office, and the Disaster Preparedness Cadets (Tagana) to distribute logistical assistance and operate public kitchens.

“The ministry, together with the social affairs office and Tagana, distributed logistics, buffer stocks, and meals for affected residents,” he said.

Currently, the ministry has established one main public kitchen at the Langkat Social Affairs Office and three independent kitchens. Together, they produce around six thousand meals daily for displaced residents.

Priyono emphasized that emergency needs, including food, family clothing, mother and child clothing, tents, blankets, and mattresses, remain the top priority. Additionally, efforts continue to provide clean water, electricity, and fuel supplies.

He expressed hope that the floodwaters would recede soon, allowing residents to resume daily activities and restore socio-economic life.

“The government has sufficient logistical stock, but the biggest challenge is transportation access to areas still difficult to reach due to flooding,” he said.

Regarding post-disaster handling, he explained that rehabilitation and reconstruction will follow.

After the district head lifts the emergency status, the central government will coordinate to address damages to roads, bridges, gas stations, and residential houses.

He assured that the government remains present and actively working with various parties to support flood recovery efforts in Langkat.
