"Governor Dedi Mulyadi expressed his offer to build a village in Padang," Padang Deputy Mayor Maigus Nasir stated on Friday.
Padang City is currently facilitating disaster-affected residents, including preparing special housing located in Koto Tangah Sub-district, Nasir informed.
He stated that he fully endorses the West Java Governor’s proposal and would welcome the development of the village, noting that it would help accommodate those displaced by the disaster.
"After listening to residents' complaints and hopes, Governor Mulyadi asked the Padang City Government to find land to accommodate the disaster-affected residents," Nasir said.
Governor Dedi Mulyadi visited several disaster-affected areas in Padang City on Thursday (December 4), including the Gunung Nago area in Kuranji Sub-district.
Currently, the Padang City Government is preparing and cleaning temporary housing for disaster victims in the city.
The Head of the Regional Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD) for Rusunawa (low-cost flats) in Padang, Angga Liberdo, noted that housing cleaning has been underway since December 2, given that the facility has not been used for a long time.
He informed there are 80 special housing units, each equipped with two bedrooms and several pieces of furniture.
"Each housing unit can accommodate a maximum of six people, and we hope to have them ready for occupancy within the next week," Liberdo remarked.
Data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) as of Friday afternoon informed that the death toll from floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra since last week reached 893, while 521 others are still missing, and more than 4,200 have been injured.
The disaster has displaced tens of thousands of residents after their homes were destroyed or carried away by flood currents.
Currently, a joint team is continuing evacuation and search for flood and landslide victims, as well as expediting road clearance and aid distribution to victims in the three provinces in Sumatra.
