Speaking at the Indonesia Sports Summit (ISS) 2025 here on Saturday, Thohir said he aims to transform the ministry’s approach to sports industry development.
As part of the effort, he decided to revoke the Youth and Sports Ministry Regulation number 14 of 2024 regarding standards in competitive sports organization management, which was deemed controversial by some relevant stakeholders.
“When there’s a regulation from us impeding the industry, we have to facilitate (growth) instead. That’s my commitment since the beginning of my tenure as Youth and Sports Minister,” he said.
The ministry is also reviewing some 191 regulations that have been issued since 2009. If possible, the regulations will be streamlined, potentially reduced to just 10 regulations, he remarked.
Data and research show that deregulation brings positive effects, such as putting inflation under control and driving economic growth, he pointed out.
“Imagine. By slashing regulations that made things more difficult, it spurs economic growth and improves national competitiveness. This is what we will be doing,” he said.
According to him, collaboration is crucial in developing the national sports industry and its ecosystem. The ISS 2025, hosted on December 6-7, serves as a strategic moment to foster and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders, such as governments and the sports community.
The minister is confident that the sports industry can become a significant factor in Indonesia’s economic development.
He highlighted Indonesia’s target of achieving economic growth of 5-8 percent.
The focus on the sports industry is because of the huge potential it has. For example, the United States’ sports industry is valued at USD 417 billion, according to data from a British financial consultant released on June 1, 2025, he noted.
