Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning (ATR)/National Land Agency (BPN) Head Nusron Wahid is preparing land for temporary shelters (huntara) for disaster survivors in 52 districts/municipalities across Sumatra.

“Temporary shelters will require land, and we will allocate land in 52 districts/municipalities,” said Nusron in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He explained that the assignment came directly from President Prabowo Subianto, who requested the preparation of land for temporary shelters as many survivors of the Sumatra disaster have been left without homes.

“If, in any of the 52 districts or cities, no land is available, whether from local governments or other sources, we will voluntarily request business use right (HGU) holders in the surrounding disaster-affected areas to relinquish part of their concession land for temporary shelters,” said Nusron.

Nusron noted that business use right (HGU) lands were originally state-owned, granted to private companies after the release of forest areas for economic purposes such as coffee or oil palm plantations.

“When the public needs land for temporary shelters, especially for disaster victims, their needs must come first. We are currently identifying and approaching HGU (plantation concession) holders so that they may voluntarily and willingly provide portions of their land for temporary shelters,” said Nusron.

The size of land needed in each district or city will vary based on assessment results. The ATR/BPN Ministry is currently awaiting identification data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

President Prabowo Subianto previously ordered the temporary revocation of HGU permits near relocation areas to facilitate the construction of emergency housing for flood survivors.

Prabowo stressed that the government must quickly secure land to build temporary shelters (huntara) for affected residents in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
