Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s deputy minister for communication and digital affairs has stressed that effective policy communication is vital to ensure government decisions are understood, credible and accountable to the public.

Deputy Minister Nezar Patria said sound policies often fail when poorly communicated, noting that public perception can turn negative despite tangible benefits if messaging strategies are weak or unclear.

According to a press statement from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar highlighted the importance of effective policy communication when speaking at an executive briefing on the role of government policy communication held on Thursday, December 11.

He said the ability to read public sentiment and social dynamics is central to effective communication in the digital era.

Such awareness is essential to maintain public trust and ensure government responses remain accurate and timely amid rapidly shifting conditions and constant online scrutiny, he added.

Nezar warned that the government must ensure official information is delivered quickly and reliably so citizens are not misled by false or misleading content circulating widely in digital spaces.

He noted that social media has transformed everyone into both information producers and consumers, creating a crowded and noisy communication landscape that complicates public understanding.

Against that backdrop, Nezar urged officials to remain consistent and transparent, especially during crises, stressing that public trust has become the most valuable asset in times of uncertainty.

He said communication is reflected not only in official statements, but also in how leaders appear in public, make decisions and interact directly with communities.

For that reason, Nezar called for stronger communication skills among public officials so policies can be explained clearly, simply and in ways that resonate with citizens.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has organized policy communication training for senior officials, including those at echelon I and II levels, as part of the initiative.

The event also marked the launch of a book titled “Policy Communication,” intended as a practical reference to help officials better understand policy processes in a systematic way.

In addition, the ministry has developed an online learning management system on policy communication with Gadjah Mada University, underscoring the government’s commitment to clearer, more credible public messaging.

These initiatives demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving its communication approach so that the public can access reliable and trustworthy information regarding government policies and regulations.
