Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has ordered the City Parks and Forests Department to prune aging trees across the capital as a preemptive safety measure against recent high-velocity winds.

The governor on Tuesday emphasized that while the city is actively trimming vulnerable trees, the sheer unpredictability of localized storms remains a significant challenge.

"I have instructed the Parks Department to tidy up all aging trees," Pramono said. "However, even with these efforts, it can be insufficient because we cannot always predict the path of a whirlwind, such as the recent strikes in Ancol and Sunda Kelapa."

The most critical issue highlighted by the governor is the gap between government warnings and public action.

Pramono noted that the Jakarta Provincial Government maintains close coordination with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to issue early warnings, but these alerts are not always utilized by the citizens.

"We consistently update the public about extreme weather. We shouldn't just blame the weather; we must anticipate it," Pramono stated.

He pointed out that the government had successfully forecasted a recent tidal flood 15 days in advance and issued warnings for the December 12 whirlwind in Ancol, yet public response remains a hurdle.

Despite the damage caused by recent storms and tidal floods in North Jakarta, the governor assured the public that the city’s emergency response teams have handled these incidents quickly and with high coordination.

He urged residents to stay vigilant and treat official weather alerts with greater urgency as the city enters a period of heightened climate volatility.
