Pangkalpinang (ANTARA) -

Indonesia will build 1,000 Red and White fishing villages nationwide to boost coastal incomes, expanding a pilot program launched this year, a government official said on Saturday.

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has completed 65 of a targeted 100 villages by 2025 and will add 35 more soon, Deputy Minister Didit Herdiawan said during a visit to Tukak village in South Bangka, Bangka Belitung Islands.

The program aims to upgrade traditional fishing settlements with integrated infrastructure across the fishing supply chain, including cold storage, ice plants, fish markets and processing facilities.

The 100 villages being developed this year will serve as pilot projects for a larger rollout planned for 2026, supported by state-backed Red and White cooperatives to strengthen local economies, he said.

Tukak village serves as a model site, featuring a dedicated fuel station for fishermen to lower operating costs and improve productivity in the local fishing sector.

Funding for the fishermen's fuel stations comes from Red and White cooperatives and is intended to support income growth and improve welfare in coastal villages and shoreline communities.

"All of this is aimed at improving welfare and boosting economic activity in coastal villages and shoreline communities," Didit said.
