Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has approved plans to draft a government regulation (PP) that will comprehensively govern and list the civil positions open to active members of the National Police (Polri).

Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra made the statement after a coordination meeting attended by ministers, state agency leaders, and members of the Commission on the Acceleration of Reform within the Polri in Jakarta on Saturday.

He emphasized that both the government and the commission regard the swift formulation of the PP as urgent, noting that the process is expected to conclude by January next year to resolve the polemics emerging in public discourse.

Mahendra, who also serves on the commission, added that the planned PP will build on the Polri Law, the Civil Servant Law, and Constitutional Court (MK) Decision No. 114/PUU-XXIII/2025, which requires active police officers holding civil posts to resign or retire.

The minister further remarked that the PP drafting will involve the Ministry of State Secretariat and the Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform, with the outcome to be reported to President Prabowo.

He also highlighted the possibility of the government and the commission initiating the drafting of a law to support comprehensive police reform.

“Mr. Jimly Asshiddiqie, as chair of the police reform commission, has indicated that a law revision may be considered. However, such a step will not be taken immediately, as the commission is still carrying out its current mandate,” he noted.

The drafting of the PP followed controversy over the perceived extensive placement of active police officers in civilian posts across 17 ministries and agencies, a practice supported by Polri Regulation (Perpol) No. 10 of 2025.

On December 13, Commissioner Mahfud MD argued that the Perpol contradicts the recent Constitutional Court (MK) ruling and is fundamentally inconsistent with Law No. 2 of 2002 on Polri and Law No. 20 of 2023 on Civil Servants.
