Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno said the New Year celebration from 2025 to 2026 in Jakarta will be marked in a simple manner and without fireworks, among other reasons, due to unfavorable weather.

“The governor has said there will be no fireworks this New Year, so there will be no impression that we are being extravagant,” he said here on Monday.

Jakarta, he noted, cannot avoid celebrating the New Year. “It can be observed, but on a modest scale,” he added.

Based on forecasts from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Jakarta and its surrounding areas are expected to see rainfall of 50-150 millimeters during the second and third ten-day periods of December 2025.

Meanwhile, peak rainfall is predicted to occur in the first ten-day period of January 2026, with most areas of Jakarta potentially receiving 150–200 millimeters of rain.

South Bogor, as an upstream area, is forecast to experience the highest rainfall of 200–300 millimeters during the first ten days of January 2026, which could increase the risk of upstream flooding affecting downstream areas, including Jakarta.

Karno stressed the importance of strengthening the early warning system to anticipate potential disasters, ranging from flooding due to high rainfall and upstream flooding to tidal flooding in Jakarta’s northern coastal areas.

“For weather modification operations to anticipate high rainfall, in line with the governor’s direction, these measures should not only be carried out in Jakarta but must also be coordinated with buffer regions around the capital,” he said.

In terms of flood control readiness, the Jakarta Provincial Water Resources Agency reported it has put on standby 612 permanent pumps and 590 mobile pumps for flood-prone areas across the capital city.
