Director General of Marine Spatial Planning at KKP, Kartika Listriana said that strengthening blue carbon and sedimentation management are part of marine spatial planning to support the blue economy while protecting coastal ecosystems.
"Nationally, Indonesia's blue carbon potential reaches more than 30 million tons of carbon, with seagrass cover covering approximately 660,000 hectares," Listriani stated at the 2026 KKP Performance Achievements press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday.
She stated that the carbon absorption potential from coastal ecosystems is recorded at more than 6 million tons of CO2 equivalent, with around 38 percent of seagrass cover located within national strategic blue carbon areas.
In 2025, Listriana continued, the KKP prepared a zoning plan for a specific Blue Carbon KSN in the Derawan waters and surrounding areas as a pilot project to strengthen marine spatial planning policies.
According to her, the zoning plan aims to protect and optimize coastal ecosystems, particularly seagrass meadows and mangroves, which play a key role in climate change mitigation and support the low-carbon development agenda.
“In 2025, the main achievement focused on finalizing the zoning plan document for the Derawan Blue Carbon National Strategic Area (KSN) and its surroundings as a pilot project,” she said.
In addition to blue carbon initiatives, the KKP has also completed a sedimentation management planning document to address sediment buildup in coastal areas and strategic shipping lanes, which affects maritime transport, fisheries productivity, and ecosystem sustainability.
She explained that priority locations for the sediment management plan include waters in 10 provinces, such as the Java Sea, Makassar Strait, Flores Sea, North Natuna Sea, Sunda Strait, Bangka Belitung, North Sumatra, and several other strategic coastal areas across Indonesia.
During the preparation process, Listriana said the KKP carried out cross-sectoral coordination, technical analyses, discussion forums, and public consultations, before refining the document based on input from relevant ministries and institutions.
