BMKG Head Teuku Faisal Fathani, in the Climate Outlook 2026 press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday, stated that his agency had zoned the peak of the rainy season across various regions in Indonesia to support cross-sector preparedness during the year-end holiday period.
The peak of the rainy season in Sumatra, particularly from the northern to central areas and South Sumatra, generally occurs in December.
Meanwhile, Lampung, Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara are expected to reach the peak of the rainy season in January 2026.
“For Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara, the rainfall is expected to peak in January, making it a primary focus for safety during the Christmas and New Year holiday period,” Fathani said.
He affirmed that BMKG had deployed personnel at various Christmas and New Year command posts to conduct intensive weather monitoring, observations, and analysis, providing real-time updates to relevant ministries and agencies.
Beyond rainfall, BMKG is also monitoring potential sea waves and aviation safety.
Information regarding wave heights is being shared with the Harbormaster and Port Authority Offices (KSOP) to serve as a basis for determining shipping operations.
The agency is also providing information support for land transportation through the weather monitoring application that can be accessed by the public and stakeholders.
He further said that for the Greater Jakarta area, BMKG is coordinating with the Jakarta Provincial Government, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), and relevant ministries to monitor the potential for extreme rainfall.
BMKG ensured that weather modification operations could be carried out as an additional mitigation measure during the holiday period to control rainfall levels.
