"We assessed several indicators, including the threat levels of air and water pollution," South Tangerang BPBD Secretary Essa Nugraha said in Tangerang, Banten, on Thursday.
He stated that the waste emergency status was declared under South Tangerang Mayoral Decree No. 600.1.17.3/Kep.500-Huk/2025 regarding the Waste Management Emergency Response, effective from December 23, 2025, to January 5, 2026.
He explained that the South Tangerang BPBD identified a significant threat of environmental damage, leading to the recommendation for a 14-day emergency period and the immediate activation or formation of a waste emergency task force.
Nugraha noted that the task force consists of several divisions, including waste management, behavioral change, and public data and information.
"It also has divisions for law enforcement and discipline, as well as a secretariat," he added.
Waste issues in South Tangerang have recently drawn attention, with piles of trash visible across various corners and streets of the city.
The growing mounds of waste have not only spoiled the city's appearance but have also impacted public health and disrupted local economic activities.
In response, various solutions and assistance have been provided by the Ministry of Environment to address the issues.
The South Tangerang City Government is currently accelerating improvements at the Cipeucang Landfill in Serpong by expanding its landfilling facilities.
In addition to increasing the landfill's capacity, local authorities are pursuing long-term solutions by implementing advanced technology. This includes the projected development of a waste-to-energy plant.
