Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Eddy Soeparno has called for the immediate ratification of the Climate Change Management Bill following a series of catastrophic natural disasters across Indonesia in 2025.

Soeparno argued that accelerating the legislation is essential to strengthen disaster mitigation as climate change impacts intensify.

He noted that 2025 was marked by severe "climate anomalies," including unseasonal flooding that blurred the lines between the rainy and dry seasons.

“Major floods struck Bali for the first time in nearly 60 years, while thousands were killed by flash floods in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra,” Soeparno said in a statement on Friday.

“This crisis requires immediate anticipatory measures.”

The lawmaker highlighted how weather uncertainty has disrupted agricultural cycles and threatened coastal communities with increasingly severe tidal flooding.

While the bill is currently slated for the 2026 National Priority Legislation Program, Soeparno is urging the House of Representatives (DPR) to fast-track the process.

He emphasized that a formal law would provide the necessary legal framework for central and regional governments to coordinate policies without administrative delays.

“Climate change handling requires tactical, coordinated, and responsive measures free from bureaucratic hurdles,” Soeparno remarked, adding that the law would serve as a vital guide for regional regulations.

Closing his statement, Soeparno described the year's disasters as a "wake-up call" for the nation and invited public input to help advance the legislative process.
