Speaking in Kendari on Monday, Kendari Basarnas Head Amiruddin explained that December marks the peak of the west monsoon season, which is characterized by large waves and strong coastal currents.
“We urge people visiting tourist attractions, especially beaches, to be extra cautious. We are currently entering the peak of the west monsoon season, with quite large waves,” he said.
“Pay attention to undersea currents, which often claim lives. Therefore, we ask the public to be especially cautious, particularly in the Taipa area,” he said.
As a precautionary measure at several popular tourist destinations in the province, Kendari Basarnas has deployed rescue personnel.
“We have personnel stationed at Nambo Beach in Kendari, Toronipa Beach in Konawe, Taipa Beach in North Konawe, Kayuangin Beach in Kolaka, and Nirwana Beach in Baubau,” he said.
In addition to monitoring tourist destinations, Amiruddin noted that his office is also focusing on homecoming transportation routes and has urged passengers not to board vehicles or boats that exceed their designated passenger capacity.
He also called on transportation operators to comply with weather advisories issued by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
“If there is an advisory indicating unfavorable weather conditions, we hope departures will be postponed until conditions improve for everyone’s safety,” he added.
