Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is accelerating temporary and permanent housing construction while intensifying weather modification operations to support post-disaster recovery in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
Abdul Muhari, head of the BNPB Data, Information and Communication Center, said on Wednesday the housing response focuses on 49,296 severely damaged homes, with a target of building 27,575 temporary shelters for affected residents.
So far, 4,280 temporary shelters have entered the construction phase. In Aceh, support from multiple stakeholders has enabled the handover of 200 housing units in several priority locations.
Construction has reached 100 percent completion in Blang Pandak, Pidie district, and Pantee Bidari sub-district in East Aceh. In North Sumatra, permanent housing development has so far covered 648 units.
In West Sumatra, authorities are accelerating phase-one temporary housing construction in Padang Pariaman district, with 34 units centered in Anduring village, Asam Pulau sub-district, where most projects have surpassed 50 percent completion.
Beyond construction, the government has fast-tracked the disbursement of temporary housing assistance funds, distributing aid to 1,950 families out of 10,656 beneficiary accounts prepared for disaster-affected households.
To support operations in the field, the agency has distributed 1,740.39 tons of logistics, or 99.86 percent of total incoming supplies, delivered by air, sea, and land.
The agency has also intensified weather modification operations to reduce the risk of extreme weather disrupting recovery efforts. As of Monday (Jan. 12), cloud-seeding operations totaled 1,150 sorties across the three provinces.
Abdul said the cross-sector collaboration underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring sustainable recovery from the disasters that struck in late November, until affected communities return to stable conditions.
