Jakarta (ANTARA) - Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono stated that Indonesia will remain within the multilateral system while striving to promote change from within, during the 2026 Annual Press Statement of the Foreign Minister (PPTM) on Wednesday.

“Indonesia will not base its national interests on multilateralism that does not work. However, Indonesia will also not leave its future to a world without rules. We will remain within the system while pushing for reform from within,” Sugiono said.

Sugiono noted that multilateralism is currently under serious threat, as its architecture lags behind the realities of geopolitics, economics, and security, which are evolving at a much faster pace.

However, he emphasized that multilateralism remains a strategic tool to expand space amid the rising logic of “hard power” and to ensure that “survival” does not become a “zero-sum game.”

For this reason, Sugiono explained, Indonesia pursued 10 important nominations across various international organizations, all of which were successfully secured. These achievements reflect the international community’s trust in Indonesia’s diplomatic track record and the principles of multilateralism itself.

Indonesia’s active participation in BRICS, G20, APEC, MIKTA, OECD, and other platforms aims to bridge interests and expand strategic space for the country, Sugiono said, while stressing that resilience is built through networks, not isolation.

He emphasized that Indonesia’s involvement in BRICS and its process toward OECD membership are not mutually exclusive but rather reflect a consistent approach of diversification aligned with the nation’s independent and active foreign policy.

“Today, multilateralism is an ecosystem that endures because it is reinforced by multiple platforms. National resilience is built by maintaining a consistent presence in these arenas with clear principles and a direction that we determine ourselves,” Sugiono said.
