Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) has agreed to cooperate with the Center for Research on International Cooperation in Educational Development at Japan’s University of Tsukuba on joint education research and academic development.

The agreement also covers exchanges of lecturers and researchers, sharing academic information and publications, and collaboration in international conferences and academic activities, said Atiek Winarti, a professor of chemical education at ULM, on Thursday.

She said follow-up cooperation is closely linked to ULM’s plan to establish a doctoral programme in Natural Science Education under its graduate school, aimed at strengthening research capacity and international academic engagement.

The University of Tsukuba’s annual focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics aligns with the proposed programme’s vision, which promotes an ethnoscience or ethno-STEM approach integrating local knowledge with modern scientific learning.

Atiek said the Non-degree Overseas Training, or NDOT, programme could become an academic option for doctoral students, although the plan remains at a conceptual stage and has received positive feedback from faculty leaders.

She added that academic activities across undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels, particularly in mathematics and natural sciences, could begin once the memorandum of understanding formally takes effect.

Atiek said cooperation with the University of Tsukuba is being implemented through the fourth NDOT programme organised by Tsukuba’s CRICED as part of its international outreach initiatives.

The programme is conducted in collaboration with the Center for Education and Learning Sciences at Indonesia’s Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, the Indonesia Association of Lesson Study, and the Indonesia Association of STEM Education.

The NDOT training aims to enhance educators’ capacity to transform teaching through lesson study, STEM education, data science and artificial intelligence, supporting innovation and internationalisation in Indonesian higher education.
