Jakarta (ANTARA) - Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin is targeting full health services recovery in the disaster-affected areas of Sumatra by March 2026.

"Our next target is to have everything fully restored by March. We have listed all the hospitals and community health centers, along with the remaining shortfalls," he said during a meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Monday.

He noted that several facilities still lack adequate support to ensure smooth health services, including thousands of mattresses damaged by mud during the floods.

“In addition, during the flooding, all ambulances were damaged. They requested new ambulances, but I refused,” Sadikin said.

Instead, the minister contacted several automotive companies, including Astra, Daihatsu, and Isuzu, to assist in repairing the damaged ambulances.

“Other vehicles have not yet been repaired and remain damaged, both government and private vehicles. As for ambulances, about 70 to 80 percent are now operational again,” he added.

The Health Ministry is also accepting donations to ensure the immediate provision of essential medical equipment, such as X-ray machines.

Beyond healthcare facilities, the ministry is pursuing the rehabilitation and reconstruction of homes belonging to medical and other healthcare workers affected by the disaster.

“Healthcare workers must serve the community. How can they work if they are still struggling to repair their homes?” Sadikin said.

To address this, the ministry has submitted a list of approximately 3,265 healthcare workers’ homes requiring repairs to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

“Hopefully, they can be prioritized. The allocated budget is Rp15 million (US$863) for minor damage, Rp30 million (US$1,762) for moderate damage, and Rp60 million (US$3,452) for severe damage, provided in the form of housing assistance,” he explained.

Sadikin expressed hope that the homes of healthcare workers can be repaired before Ramadan or Eid al-Fitr so they can work optimally in serving their communities.
