Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Provincial Government will help the implementation of Weather Modification Operations (WMO) in buffer areas such as Depok, Tangerang, and other surrounding regions.

“We will cooperate for that (WMO). In other regions, the funding for WMO is not available, and therefore Jakarta will definitely help,” Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said at City Hall on Friday.

Previously, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said that the central government has coordinated with the Jakarta Provincial Government, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to strengthen WMO in the Greater Jakarta area.

The WMO operation is expected to reduce rainfall intensity, which is expected to peak until the end of January.

As for areas around Jakarta, Anung said his side will take similar measures. “So whatever directives are given by the President for Jakarta, we will certainly carry them out,” he said.

He requested that the WMO be extended until January 27 in Jakarta. Previously, the WMO was planned to run only until January 23, 2026.

The decision was taken as he did not want Jakarta to be unprepared in facing extreme weather warnings from BMKG.

He also said that he had no issue if the WMO drew criticism from the public, as the situation in Jakarta would be far worse if the measure were not taken.

"Even though there are criticisms from many people regarding weather modification, in my view that is fine,” he stressed.

He also allowed WMO flights to be conducted up to a maximum of three times per day. With this measure, rainfall intensity in Jakarta is expected to be less severe and flooding can be prevented.
