Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has been formally invited by the International Football Federation (FIFA) to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held across Canada, the United States, and Mexico in June and July.

The invitation was personally extended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino during his meeting with Prabowo on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum 2026 in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday (Jan. 22), according to a statement from the presidential media team.

“Gianni Infantino invited the president to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place in the United States from June to July,” the team noted in its release on Friday.

This engagement followed an earlier encounter between the two leaders in New York in September 2025, prior to President Prabowo’s address at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Infantino also used the Davos meeting to outline FIFA’s strategic initiatives and future plans aimed at strengthening football development in Indonesia.

Beyond his talks with Infantino, President Prabowo also greeted French football icon Zinedine Zidane at the multilateral forum.

“Today, I met and held discussions with world football legend Zinedine Zidane and his son Theo Zidane on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum,” Prabowo wrote in the caption of an Instagram post featuring a photo from the encounter.

During their conversation, Prabowo asked Zidane about Theo’s career progress.

Theo responded by sharing that he is currently playing for Córdoba, a club competing in Spain’s second division.
