Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment is supervising 68 companies in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra as part of efforts to mitigate hydrometeorological disasters in the region.

“We are currently monitoring 68 companies, with another 50 in the process of reporting to us. By mid-February, we expect all business entities in North Sumatra, Aceh, and West Sumatra to have completed field verification,” Environment Minister and Head of the Environmental Management Agency (BPLH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said in Jakarta on Monday.

Speaking during a working meeting with Commission XII of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Nurofiq said the supervision covers 31 companies in Aceh, 15 in North Sumatra, and 22 in West Sumatra.

He added that administrative sanctions have been imposed on the 68 companies, requiring them to carry out environmental audits.

“Based on the evaluation of these administrative sanctions, all business entities in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh are required to complete the audits within three months from the date of issuance,” Nurofiq said.

The environmental audits are intended to strengthen environmental permitting instruments and improve compliance.

Nurofiq stressed that enforcement would be applied in stages. “If the requirements are not fulfilled, permits will be revoked, and as a final step, criminal sanctions may be imposed,” he said.

In addressing hydrometeorological disasters from an environmental standpoint, the ministry applies law enforcement measures based on spatial data and field verification, supported by scientific evidence.

“All enforcement actions at the Ministry of Environment are grounded in science-based assessments. Without scientific backing, enforcement efforts would lack clarity and be vulnerable to legal challenges,” Nurofiq said.
