Prasetyo said the government would conduct on-site inspections to gain a full and accurate picture of conditions and problems affecting the border area before deciding on further steps.
“We will look for a solution. We will check directly in the field,” Prasetyo told reporters at parliament in Jakarta on Monday.
He said the issue would also be discussed with relevant ministries and institutions to reach what he described as the best possible outcome for all parties involved.
“We will discuss it,” he added, without elaborating on a specific timeline or mechanism.
Earlier, the National Border Management Agency told a parliamentary hearing that an Outstanding Boundary Problem had been agreed between Indonesia and Malaysia at the 45th Joint Indonesia–Malaysia meeting in February 2025.
The agency said three villages in Nunukan District, North Kalimantan province — Kabungalor, Lipaga and Tetagas — are currently recorded as falling within Malaysian territory.
However, officials also noted that parts of Malaysian territory, covering about 5,207 hectares, are designated to become part of Indonesia for the development of a planned free trade zone.
Separately, North Kalimantan Border Management Agency head Ferdy Manurun Tanduklangi denied claims that villages had been “lost” due to sudden changes in the Indonesia–Malaysia border.
He said a parliamentary working committee meeting on January 22, 2026, did not specifically discuss a border dispute, but instead focused on accelerating development and improving welfare in border communities.
Tanduklangi made the remarks in Tanjung Selor on Saturday in response to a border controversy that has been widely circulating on social media.
He said the settlement of the Indonesia–Malaysia land boundary in Nunukan is ongoing and follows a long-established bilateral process.
“The process has been carried out for years and in stages, not abruptly,” he said, urging the public to rely on official information.
