Indonesia has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding inclusive access to justice and eliminating discrimination against women and children, as officials highlighted legal reforms ahead of a key United Nations gender equality forum.
The pledge was delivered by Dewa Ayu Laksmiyati, Assistant Deputy for Gender Mainstreaming in Human Development, Culture, Community Empowerment, and Regional Governments at the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, during a hybrid preparatory meeting for the 70th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) hosted by UNESCAP and UN Women Asia-Pacific.
“Indonesia underscores the central role of a strong and inclusive legal framework in advancing protection and equal access to justice,” Laksmiyati said during the meeting in Jakarta on Monday.
She said Indonesia has embedded international human rights instruments, particularly the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), into gender-responsive laws and regulations.
Laksmiyati noted women in the Asia-Pacific remain disproportionately affected by violence, underscoring the need for legal systems that are inclusive, accessible, affordable, and focused on survivor protection and recovery.
Indonesia has rolled out concrete measures, including regional women and child protection service units, the SAPA 129 complaints hotline, the SIMASHAM human rights application, and free legal aid through legal assistance posts.
Despite progress, challenges remain, including limited institutional capacity, geographic barriers, and social norms that discourage reporting, she said.
Laksmiyati added that Indonesia will continue strengthening survivor-centered, gender-responsive justice systems and called for deeper regional and international cooperation.
The 70th Commission on the Status of Women is scheduled to be held in New York from March 9 to 19, 2026.
