President Prabowo Subianto’s special envoy for climate and energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, said the timeline aligns with Presidential Regulation No. 110 of 2025 on Carbon Economic Value Instruments and National Greenhouse Gas Emission Control.
“The presidential regulation governing and establishing the carbon market can be seen as a game changer,” he said at the ESG Sustainability Forum 2026 in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Hashim highlighted that the regulation sets out provisions on the economic value of carbon emissions, including mechanisms for carbon credit trading, the Carbon Unit Registration System, safeguards against double counting, and links between domestic and international carbon markets.
He emphasized that the government is working to integrate several carbon registration systems into a single national framework to improve efficiency and accountability in transaction records.
Such integration, he continued, is a key prerequisite for Indonesia’s carbon market to operate in line with international standards and gain the trust of global stakeholders.
Hashim then pointed out that Indonesia has vast potential to reap economic benefits from carbon trading, citing growing international interest in carbon credits, particularly those sourced from natural resources.
On that note, he underlined Indonesia’s advantage in nature-based solutions, referring to its extensive forestland, mangroves, seagrass meadows, and marine ecosystems, which have drawn the attention of global carbon investors.
Hashim added that the Indonesian government is determined to harness Indonesia’s geological potential to develop carbon capture and storage technologies.
He said the Indonesian government’s ongoing efforts to build a reliable carbon trading ecosystem have been welcomed globally, as reflected in positive responses voiced at various international forums.
“The presidential regulation concerning the carbon market has generated strong interest among international stakeholders,” he affirmed.
He expressed hope that the operation of the carbon market will provide Indonesia with a robust new source of financing to support environmental protection, forest conservation, the energy transition, and broader economic growth, while contributing to global climate and sustainability goals.
