Jakarta (ANTARA) -

Immigration and Correctional Affairs Minister Agus Andrianto stated that the ministry has designated more than 2,000 locations for the implementation of community service sentences for defendants.

Community service is a sentence provided by the new Criminal Code for defendants convicted of minor crimes, serving as an alternative to imprisonment or fines.

During a meeting with Commission XIII of the House of Representatives (DPR) at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, he revealed that the government has prepared 2,460 public facilities for the community sentence.

The public facilities include government offices, places of worship, city parks, orphanages, nursing homes, and Islamic boarding schools (pesantrens).

"To start the implementation of community service sentences, we have prepared 1,174 cooperation agreements with sectoral partners. The agreement will be between individual probation centers and the facility managements," Andrianto stated.

The 1,174 partners in the agreement comprise 517 regional authorities, 329 government institutions, 206 social centers, and 122 social foundations, he said.

The ministry has been in touch with the Supreme Court regarding their readiness to implement the community service sentencing for defendants of minor crimes, Andrianto said.

The minister expressed hope that the arrangement would help facilitate the implementation of community service sentences and that the implementation of the new Criminal Code would be synchronized between the Supreme Court and the ministry.
