Padang (ANTARA) - The West Sumatra provincial government is targeting that all survivors of flash floods and landslides in several affected areas are relocated to temporary shelters before the start of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan 1447 Hijri.

“We hope and are working to ensure that all flood survivors are able to move into temporary shelters before Ramadan 1447 Hijri,” West Sumatra Provincial Secretary Arry Yuswandi said in Padang on Tuesday.

Yuswandi said the local government, working with Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Danantara, and the military and police, is accelerating the construction of temporary shelters in Agam Regency, Tanah Datar Regency, and several other locations.

“Some of the shelters are already being occupied by residents, while others are still under construction and are expected to be completed ahead of the fasting month,” he explained.

Responding to reports that one temporary shelter complex in Jorong Salareh Aia, Palembayan sub-district, had been flooded after residents moved in, Yuswandi urged local authorities to address the issue promptly to prevent public concern.

“We ask that there be proper anticipation from the local government so that temporary shelters occupied by the community are no longer flooded,” he said.

Separately, West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi said the provincial government will prioritize disaster-affected areas as the main destinations for its Ramadan 1447 Hijri safari program.

“This year’s Ramadan safari will be directed to disaster-affected areas so that we can directly see and feel the extent of recovery efforts in those locations,” the governor said.

The West Sumatra provincial government estimates it will require at least Rp21.44 trillion (about US$1.3 billion) to meet post-disaster needs following disasters that struck 16 regencies and cities in late November 2025.

The budget reflects phased and planned recovery requirements to ensure rehabilitation efforts are carried out effectively and reach targeted communities. In terms of authority, post-disaster needs are divided into three levels.
