Satyawan Pudiyatmoko, an official from the ministry, stated in Bandung on Thursday that the permit revocation was necessary to ensure the protection of all animals.
"The state must not allow animals to become victims of administrative issues. We are revoking the permit to ensure that the animals at Bandung Zoo are protected and not neglected," he said.
The ministry will be responsible for the care and rescue of all animals for a maximum of three months until a new manager is appointed who is deemed professional and meets animal welfare standards.
"The animals within it are a trust that we must protect together," Satyawan added.
The government also stressed its responsibility to protect regional assets and preserve wildlife by securing Bandung Zoo’s Regional Assets (BMD), after the Forestry Minister signed the decree revoking the conservation institution's permit and the foundation's management of the site ended.
Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan stated that securing the Bandung Zoo area is essential to managing regional assets and ensuring the safety of all animals.
"Bandung Zoo is land owned by the Bandung City Government and serves as a public green open space with a protective function. The state is obligated to safeguard the asset and ensure the animals within it are protected," he said.
Farhan explained that Bandung Zoo is currently being managed jointly by the central government through the Forestry Ministry, the West Java Provincial Government, and the Bandung City Government to ensure a safe and controlled transition period.
He emphasized that authority over animals, especially protected species, rests with the Forestry Ministry, while the Bandung City Government supports rescue efforts and care according to welfare standards.
