The agreement was the result of a closed-door working meeting between Commission I of the DPR RI, the Ministry of Defense, and the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) on Tuesday.
"During the meeting, we agreed to accept this grant from the Japanese government," Deputy Minister of Defense Donny Ermawan said during a press conference after the meeting.
According to him, this ship grant is part of the Japanese government's Official Security Assistance (OSA) program. Previously, Indonesia had also received a grant of two ships worth 1 billion yen from the same program.
Ermawan assessed this ship grant is important for Indonesia considering the various potential vulnerabilities posed by the country's vast territory.
This additional defense equipment will have a significant impact on the Indonesian Navy's security in Indonesian waters, he remarked.
From an operational perspective, he stated that the vessel is a patrol boat with speeds of up to 40 knots, suitable for operation in Indonesian waters.
"The value is around 1.9 billion Japanese yen. That would be approximately three or four ships," he informed.
Regarding the economic aspect, Ermawan said the Indonesian government did not use any state budget funds for this agreement.
He addressed that the agreement also considers the strengthening of the cooperative relationship between the two countries.
"Especially between the Ministry of Defense from both countries," he said.
Meanwhile, Utut Adianto, Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, stated that all mechanisms have been met, with approval from all factions.
However, he emphasized the importance of state sovereignty in this defense grant.
“This assistance should not dictate us in any way,” he emphasized.
Following this, the commission’s approval will be forwarded to a plenary session of the Indonesian House of Representatives.
“Once the process is completed, the items can be used. The ministry oversees their distribution, and vessels are typically brought to the Navy,” he said.
