This was highlighted by the Chair of the Sumatra Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Acceleration Task Force, Muhammad Tito Karnavian, in a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Karnavian, concurrently serving as Minister of Home Affairs, emphasized that repairing educational facilities is key to ensuring that teaching and learning activities can return to normal.
In West Sumatra, educational services are already operational as repairs to affected school infrastructure have been accelerated.
In North Sumatra, several educational facilities still require further attention. This includes public schools and religious schools, as well as places of worship.
Furthermore, in Aceh, the damage to educational infrastructure is quite extensive, covering schools at all levels, from early childhood education to senior high schools, including Islamic boarding schools, thereby requiring further accelerated rehabilitation.
Since the disaster response phase started, the Indonesian government has deployed 90,109 personnel, including those from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), and government-affiliated academies.
"Several government-affiliated academies have been tasked with conducting community service programs there," he remarked.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu’ti, noted that the process of assessing school damage is ongoing through data harmonization with provincial, city, and district education offices.
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has provided assistance in various forms, including school supplies, emergency classrooms, and allowances for teachers.
According to him, the total number of affected schools across the three provinces reached 4,863. This includes 3,409 schools with light damage, 925 with moderate damage, 437 with severe damage, and 92 that require complete relocation.
