The psychologist, who is known as Romi, said not everything is appropriate to share in public, particularly details related to one’s private life.
“If what is shared is educational content, research, or a lecture, it may still have an impact on others. But when it becomes personal, there is no need to upload too much. There are things that morally should limit someone from saying them,” Romi told ANTARA in Jakarta on Tuesday.
She noted that any information shared on social media can trigger various perceptions among audiences. The impact may also extend to personal relationships.
“It can also affect relationships with certain people because of what is shared on social media. Oversharing can have negative consequences because not everyone will necessarily accept or agree with what is being shared,” she said.
Romi explained that people who overshare are often unaware of their behavior. One of the triggers is the positive response they receive online, such as attention from audiences, likes, or comments that create a sense of pleasure.
“Why are people unaware when they are oversharing? Because sometimes they receive pleasant responses and have an audience that pays attention to them,” she said.
She added that the feeling of being appreciated or noticed can encourage individuals to continue sharing information without considering the potential consequences.
For that reason, Romi advised social media users to be more cautious with every post. Each piece of content has two sides, pros and cons, making it important to exercise restraint before sharing something publicly.
She also stressed the need for moral stimulation so individuals can distinguish between right and wrong, including when expressing opinions on social media.
In moral concepts, there are seven essential virtues that should guide behavior, including empathy, self-control, and conscience.
According to her, empathy helps individuals consider the impact of their words on others. Self-control plays a role in restraining the urge to disclose everything publicly, while conscience determines whether an action is right or wrong.
“The seven essential virtues must exist in every human being and are already there, but they need to be stimulated so that we can better understand them and apply them in our daily lives, for example when making decisions, including when uploading content on social media,” Romi said.
