Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education announced the ongoing formulation of a circular letter addressing adjustments to the student admission system to prevent dropouts in disaster-hit Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra provinces.

"There will be some policy adjustments. We are currently working on a ministerial circular regarding the admission of disaster-affected pupils," said Jamjam Muzaki, a representative of the ministry's Disaster-Resilient Education Unit.

Speaking in a policy dialogue in South Tangerang, Banten, on Monday (March 2), he explained the circular as an instrument to anticipate parents' decision to transfer their children to another school following deadly floods and landslides that struck the three provinces last November.

"We aim to facilitate student mutations, designing mechanisms for admission in disaster-hit schools," Muzaki added.

The official noted that the ministry would allow affected schools to conduct admission according to their quota in the previous academic year, although some of them will likely face a gap favoring classroom capacity over the number of available study groups.

Highlighting dropout risks, he emphasized that the upcoming circular is expected to assure students and parents to continue enrollment.

"We are also monitoring student and teacher attendance at schools, especially those who may have to relocate or move," he added.

Apart from admission, the ministry has issued a circular to support post-disaster learning and teaching activities.

Muzaki said that a team from the Center for Curriculum had begun disseminating information on learning models in emergency or makeshift schools to regional governments, guiding them to sustain effective educational services.

"Our efforts include outlining guidance for learning activities in evacuation tents, providing psychosocial assistance, and enhancing the capacity of teachers in disaster-hit regions," he concluded.
